Instantly Highlight Data Irregularities Without Formulas!
Did you know Excel has a keyboard shortcut that can instantly identify mismatched values in your data? No formulas, no complicated setup.
This is especially useful when comparing data from two sources, checking for data entry mistakes, or looking for inconsistencies in reports.
Find the Irregularities in Seconds
Select two columns of data that should contain matching values, such as B2:C1000, starting with the reference column on the left.
Press Ctrl + \ (backslash).
Excel instantly selects the cells that don't match the first value in each row!
Go to the Home tab and apply a fill color to highlight the selected cells.
That's it! You've identified the mismatched values without writing a single formula.
Example: Spot Incorrect Invoice Amounts
Imagine you're comparing invoice amounts from two different systems. The amounts should match, but some discrepancies have slipped through.
Invoice | System A | System B |
|---|---|---|
INV-001 | $250 | $250 |
INV-002 | $480 | $480 |
INV-003 | $725 | $750 |
INV-004 | $190 | $190 |
INV-005 | $1,250 | $1,200 |
Select the two amount columns (System A and System B), press Ctrl + \ (backslash) , and Excel immediately selects the discrepancies, including the $750 and $1,200 values.
Apply a fill color to make the irregularities stand out, just like in the example above.
Note
You can also access this feature through Home > Find & Select > Go To Special > Row differences.
Important: This shortcut compares cells within each row against the active cell's column. If you want to compare against the leftmost column, make sure that column contains the active cell when you select your data.
The highlighting is not dynamic, so you'll need to repeat the process if your data changes.
