Good day,

Let's check out Excel's new Plan and Edit features for Copilot AI.

This allows you to have a chat with Excel to figure out what you should or shouldn't do, then decide on a plan, and execute that plan.

[Tiny Tip] How to Add Plan & Edit Mode to Excel Copilot

Microsoft recently added new Copilot modes to Excel, including Edit Mode and Plan Mode.

These let you Automate working in Excel using AI.

  • Edit Mode allows Copilot to make changes directly in your workbook.

  • Plan Mode lets Copilot show you what it plans to do before making changes.

Check out this week's tutorial if you want to see how you can use these features in Excel.

Update Excel to Get these New Features

Even if you have Copilot in Excel, you may not have access to these new features until you update it.

(Save and close all workbooks before updating Excel.)

  1. Open a blank Excel workbook.

  2. Go to File > Account.

  3. Click Update Options.

  4. Select Update Now.

  5. Wait for Office to download and install the latest updates. (This can take a while.)

  6. Restart Excel.

Check for the New Copilot Modes

  1. Open a workbook.

  2. Click Home > Copilot OR look to the bottom-right of the spreadsheet and you may see a new Copilot button that you can click.

  3. Open the Copilot pane.

You should now see the options for:

  • Allow Editing

    • Update the workbook based on what you tell Copilot AI.

  • Plan

    • Plan updates before AI executes anything.

  • Chat Only

    • Original chatgpt style AI chat that does not change your workbook.

AI Credits

Using Copilot's AI features in this manner will use your Microsoft AI credits.
