[Tiny Tip] Find the Highest Value and Who It Belongs To
Sometimes you don't just want to know the highest number in a list, but you also want to know which item that number belongs to.
Example Data
Suppose you have this Excel Table named tblSales:
Store | Sales |
Downtown | $12,500 |
Airport | $9,800 |
Westside | $18,400 |
North Mall | $14,200 |
Eastside | $11,600 |
1. Find the Highest Value
Use the MAX function to return the highest sales value:
=MAX(tblSales[Sales])
Result: $18,400
2. Find Who It Belongs To
Combine MAX with XLOOKUP to return the store with that highest value:
=XLOOKUP(MAX(tblSales[Sales]),tblSales[Sales],tblSales[Store])
Result: Westside
How It Works
MAX finds the largest number in the Sales column.
XLOOKUP searches for that value in the Sales column and returns the matching store.
Note: If two stores have the exact same highest value, XLOOKUP returns the first match.
